House Sparrow Control New York
The house sparrow is an invasive species in North America and is not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This gives us more control options than with native bird species. House sparrows are particularly problematic when they nest in HVAC units, dryer vents, and other building penetrations.
Why House Sparrows Are Particularly Problematic
- HVAC nest fires: Sparrow nests in HVAC units and dryer vents are a fire hazard. Lint and nesting material can ignite, and blocked vents create carbon monoxide risks.
- Rapid reproduction: House sparrows can raise 4–5 clutches of eggs per year, rapidly growing the local population.
- Aggressiveness: House sparrows aggressively displace native cavity-nesting birds like bluebirds and tree swallows.
- Year-round nesting: Unlike most birds, sparrows may nest year-round in mild conditions.
Sparrow Exclusion Methods
•
Vent covers and screens — properly sized to prevent sparrow entry while maintaining airflow
•
Soffit and fascia gap sealing — prevents access to common nesting sites
•
Building void exclusion — nets and hardware cloth for larger open areas
•
Trapping (where legal and appropriate) — as part of a larger management program
